What is a Responsive Website ?

A Responsive Website is an approach of laying-out and coding a website such that the website provides an optimal viewing experience — ease of reading and navigation with a minimum of resizing, panning, and scrolling — across a wide range of devices (from desktop computer monitors to mobile phones).

The web designer creating a Responsive Design should ensure that the website’s navigation elements, screen-layouts, text, images, audio/video players and other UI elements re-adjust themselves on a variety of devices.

In Simple English

A Responsive website has a layout design that will rearrange itself to fit whichever device is viewing the website. The layout will resize images and text to fit the device. The user will not have to zoom in to make the elements larger as on a non-responsive design.

Notice the way the website has adjusted itself to fit on the iphone. The content has been laid out and fills the frame. The user does not have to swipe left or right to view the content.

Why is this important ?

With people switching to tablets and smartphones as their main hub, a clean responsive website is a great way to keep your clients invested in your brand. You will be enhancing the user’s experience when viewing your website on their mobile devices.
